All 50 states were evaluated using three key criteria: the average cost of a cup of coffee, the number of people per coffee shop, and the volume of Google searches for “coffee near me” relative to the state’s population. Each state received a score between 1 and 100 for each criterion, and these scores were then averaged to calculate an overall “total score.”
The search volume ratio was determined by comparing two factors: the state’s share of total searches for “coffee near me” and the state’s share of the U.S. population. This approach allowed for a fair comparison of interest in coffee across states of different sizes.
